Live your god damned dream

Hellooooo Linden Lab? How about a post about the password login bug on your blog so we don’t all freak out? Thanks very much.

Okay, I’ll explain the issue, as Burgess points out that simply bitching in my headline is of little actual service to my readers. *sigh*

More in the “things that are pissing me off” category: When Second Life breaks and the dudes in charge at Linden don’t bother to tell anybody what’s going on.
Read up on this at Wrath Paine’s blog and check Tateru Nino’s post at Second Life Insider for more detailed information. But let me describe my own personal experience of the problem at hand.

“What the fuck?!” I’m trying to fall asleep last night when I hear Alex bitching from the other room. “I got logged out and I can’t log back in - I’m getting an error message that says my password is wrong when I know it’s not.”

He then tried logging into his account at the website, and got a username/password not found message, despite using his correct username and password. So he hit the “reset password” button, followed the instructions, then was able to get back in.

When I went to login to the website today, same bullshit. Then I read Wrath’s post and Tateru Nino’s post and found that this password reset crap is a much larger issue. So then, why the hell hasn’t Linden Lab at least mentioned something on their blog about it? How about,

“Dear beloved customers, we’re having a technical issue and some of you may need to reset your password.”

You know, it could even be that short. Hey, Linden Lab, feel free to use that line, courtesy of your pal Myg.

See, now that we have invested a significant amount of time and money into SL, this shit is no longer a cute inconvenience. It’s damned poor customer service. What gives, Linden Lab? Are ya’ll trying to keep us safe by keeping us out altogether?

UPDATE 6/6:

Apparently, this tried to get through to my email inbox at yahoo today:

Technical changes to the new Support Portal made it necessary for us to change some passwords. If you have not already done so, please go to the website and reset your password. If you are unable to, you may call us at 866-476-9763. International residents may file a ticket through the guest login and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Thank you
Linden Lab Support

It ended up in my spam folder. It should have come earlier, and I’m still saying, wtf? Why not just put this statement on the blog, where we all go to find info when something fucks up?

But I am also saying, yes, thank you Linden Lab Support, for reaching out to us and letting us know what was up. Better timing next time!

    http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/05/29/password-recovery-fix-in-the-works/

Says they fixed the password server, it wasn’t recovering passwords.

Thanks very much for the link Crissa. I think however that password recovery bug you’re referring to is different from this issue–seems like this is some sort of new problem. I hope we get some more info about it soon.

From my computer guy point-of-view, I’m VERY glad I don’t work for Linden Labs nowadays! My 50 customers can already be a pain in the ass, but with 6 million of them around, I’d hide in a deep hole whenever something goes wrong (and it always does, mostly when you don’t expect it). ;-)

But beside that, I’m all with you on the necessity for more detailed information (or information at all). *checks Linden blog again*

    tsk. tsk. Such anger.
Myg needs an anger management session.
    Deep breath.

@Timothy - I’m with you. Never would I wish to work customer service at LL. Ever. Never. Ever! That said, a simple line at the site like “Hey, there’s an issue” and I wouldn’t have been irritated enough to post this.

@Seraphine - heh. You think this is “angry?” *smirks*

This is actually just the way I talk (it’s a regional thing and annoys the piss out of Alex–just ask him). I was bugged when I wrote this, for sure. But if you really want to see me angry, please be sure to review this “Fight for Topgol” post where I start off with kicking a camper in the head. Or, just go through the “Portraits of SL Assholes” files. Now that’s angry. Or wait, is that broadly offensive? *grins evilly* Also, I may have an outrageous temper, but I never hold grudges. Just one fact about me. I’m not sure, but I think that keeps me from being a good serial killer candidate.

(Your comments are always appreciated, Seraphine!)

“what desperation and a sense of helplessness can do to somebody” (Quote from “Flight for Topgol”)

I don’t want to get on your bad side. Ever. Never.
Myg, I appreciate that you don’t hold grudges,
but I also think you never forget. :\
