Did you go to Second Fest?

Did you go to Second Fest? (That there’s a screen shot - it’ll take you to the Second Fest website if you click it.)
With all the bullshit crying, hemming and hawing in the corporate press about how Second Life is so damned lame when it comes to marketing opportunities, I’m just curious how an event like this, sponsored by The Guardian and Intel, came across. Let me know if you did indeed swoon to West End Girls or registered to win a laptop. Did you warm to the notion of cashing out your Lindens to buy real life goods?

Hmm. Did not enter the contest, because of the stupid registration thingie.
I did go. And there were a total of six people there including myself and the security guard. I was shocked at the lack of attendance. The booths were all nicely layed out and had a variety of things to sell. The Museum was incredible and very educational. I will check back to see what the rest of your responses garner. Thanks Myg for asking! {:o)
Sorry Myg. We may be talking about two different Fests. Which in that case means the advertising was even less than I thought. Obviously there is some confusion here. Sort it out for me please!
Uhhh…I didn’t even hear about this until just now.
Big Concert? Where? When?…
Damn need to not stay out so late at night.
These marketing people really need to work on their SL Marketing skill, didn’t hear about it till it was over..’sigh’
Yeah, I’m mad I didn’t hear about the SL Pride event either until it was over. And I actually read blogs and stuff! What the hell?
No kidding. I was comparing SL4B to this. SL4B, run nearly entirely by volunteer residents vs. Second Fest, a corporate sponsored thingy. In your opinion, which was more effective at generating buzz and interest?
I only heard about SecondFest because I noticed something about PetShop Boys playing SL on a totally unrelated blog a few days before the event–but I didn’t notice anything anywhere else, or realize the PSB show was connected with something larger. You would think a bunch of big, professional marketers could figure out how to communicate in a little ol’ backwater like SL, wouldn’t you? Looking at Esteban’s post, I’m inclined to think the organizers may have purposely killed the advertising for it after some exploit was discovered at the fest location whereby avatars could escape into RL–even if only in reduced size.
hehe I think I have to agree with Alex and tend to go with Esteban’s conspiracy theory on this one.
I mean seriously, otherwise, how else could something as seemingly cool and hip as SecondFest go virtually (heh, accidental pun) unnoticed?? Very bad marketing campaign. Heck, even the schedule on the official website couldn’t be bothered to list events in SL time!
As if I wasn’t still grumbling over missing out on all of the SL Pride festivities - - my one chance a year to accidentally stumble into a lesbian bar all in the name of a good cause! hmmfft.
Personally, I thought SecondFest could’ve been a really cool thing had the word gotten out and received some more hype. Someone definitely missed the boat on this one and should not be allowed to coordinate any further SL events because they quite suck at it.
Well lets be honest, most big, mainstream marketing companies do not know how to do marketing/promotion in SL.
They try RL approaches, and as we all know SL is just not quite the same as RL. Even some of the metrics they use to judge the ROI of a campaign do not work in SL. Whodo you count eyeballs if an avi can stand in one place and you can run your camera all over, your avi, may never get within 30m of a product, ad, or event, but you might have seen it.
And I hate to say it but the actual look of it left a lot to be desired as well.
The very sad part is the fact that it was Intel Core Duo sponsored, and *clears throat* I dearly love my Macbook Pro which runs on that very chip. There’d be no 2L for me without it!
Damn, why don’t these companies come to us if they wanna know how to get an event hyped?
