Podcast: (n)eXt set from 8/6/07
Posted by Burgess
Myg looks like she’s workin’ it, but actually she is in the middle of slipping on one of the banana peels Esteban left laying on the floor during last night’s (n)eXt new music Monday set.

Scout Niblett – Dinosaur Egg
Dinosaur Egg has been stuck in my head and making me laugh for two weeks. Scout does more for the folk resurgence with this song than all of Devendra Banhart’s efforts.
Bat for Lashes – Horse & I
The indie darlings of the week. Thom Yorke loves ’em too. Despite this, Bat for Lashes deserve the buzz. Check out the eerie video for What’s a Girl to Do here.
Illinois – Alone Again
This one and the next track are for Wrath. These two are so 60s retro stick in yr head. But man, can these kids write a pop song. I predict this will never be as big as it should, unless someone smart puts it into a hip soundtrack or whatever is this fall’s hit TV show.
Peter Bjorn and John – Young Folks
Try to not whistle this one for the rest of your day. Sounds like 1964 meets tomorrow. And the band’s initials are PB&J, how cool is that?
The New Pornographers – My Rights Versus Yours
Man, this set is so mellow this week. Don’t worry, it picks up. It just seems the classic sounds are this year’s trend. The New Ps blend Carpenters and ELO here in ways never imagined. Or is that The Partridge Family influence I’m hearing? And what’s that chorus? “A new empire in bags. The truth in one free afternoon.†Is that what they’re singing?
The Thrills – Nothing Changes Round Here
From the brilliant album, Teenager. Joyous melancholia. Perfect for the waning days of summer and those last bittersweet evenings before you both go your separate ways in September.
The National – About Today
Here’s the set killer. I just about cleared the club with this one. Not really upbeat enough for the Monday night crowd, but this record is so good, I’m pushing it hard. The National aren’t playing around. If The Thrills track is about summer, this one is for the fall, say, late October during the harvest when you know the first frost is just around the corner. She’s been gone for weeks.
Editors – An End Has a Start
I need this album. This band has taken crap for sounding like Interpol, who take crap for sounding like Joy Division. Bullshit. The 80s sound is in again, The Editors and Interpol and The Killers and a host of other bands know it and do it with style—and better than many, many bands that were doing it the 1980s. And they all still have enough originality to keep me interested. Don’t like it? Don’t listen.
God Love You for a Liar – Holding You is Like Keeping Water in My Hands
Despite their penchant for long titles, GLYFAL are not a post-rock outfit like Explosions in the Sky. I think they take their cues from obscure 80s groundbreakers like When People Were Shorter and Lived Near the Water. Add in a dash of Placebo and you got this sound.
Aesop Rock – None Shall Pass
My fave new hip hop. I have no idea if that title is a Mont Python and the Holy Grail reference, but I’m pretending it is. The sound is about as far from Python as you can get, though. Strangely, thinking about this reminds me of the time I saw Cex freestyle rap about Dungeons & Dragons during a CMJ showcase. Yeah, I’m digressing. You’re probably not even reading this.
Nova Robotics – Retox
Tweaky electro and indie guitars. A tad long, but I’m down with the sunbeam these cats are basking in.
The Red Romance – You’re So Cold
Is this band trying to kill The Killers? Worth a listen. Probably not a breakout track for the band, but they could have it in them.
Foo Fighters – The Pretender
The latest. They’re probably past their peak, but they can still crank out the rock. Presented here for your review. Probably necessary only for diehard fans and completists.
Against Me! – Piss and Vinegar
At two-and-a-half minutes, Against Me! knows just when to quit on this one. Rock hard, and get out while the crowd is still pogoing.
Revolution Mother – Above the Crawl
Heavy retro stoner crunch. I can dig it.
Kinski – Punching Goodbye Out Front
More psychedelic than the last track. Maybe overkill for the evening, but in case your brain hasn’t drained yet, this ought to do it.
The Go! Team – Grip Like a Vice
The set ran over the hour—but this track from these women was the perfect segue into Esteban’s funky set and a damn catchy song it is.

Esteban should be concerned about that smarting ankle of mine too. My lawyer saw the whole thing happen…
Um, Esteban has no money. Also, as co-owner of Clockwork, s/he is your employee too. I don’t think you can sue yourself in this case.
And why not?
I herewith state for the record that the alleged peel or peels, being neither absolute nor qualified property, neither constrain(s) nor enjoin(s) me nor any properties or assets held by me nor by members of any meanass streetgang of which I hold membership or am otherwise a constituent party.
P.S. No one really slips on banana peels: http://tinyurl.com/2ngvux
/me just shakes his head.
I think these situations exemplify the archetype for that long-ago situation that spawned the phrase: “With friends like these…”
*avoids Burgess’s scowling gaze as he enters the club.
Alex!
I’m so glad for these podcasts - I can still get my Clockwork fix in during my enforced absence. One more week away, for the Other Personality’s work schedule, and I’ll be back and dancing to the best night of DJ’ing in SL!
Thank you, Sophrosyne. I’m glad you’re enjoying them. Those Other Personalities–meatatars, as Myg calls them–can be very demanding. Mine is a real slave driver; he forces me to make mixes for his iPod. Like he just couldn’t do it himself, the lazy sod.
Yikes, was unable to attend (n)eXt this week and therefore am most grateful the podcast is available!!
Oh man, I can totally hear the ELO influence in The New Pornographers track, you are so right. But why am I getting The Sundays meets Bjork vibe so strongly from the Bat for Lashes tune? Not that I’m complaining one bit.
Thank you so much for FINALLY being able to get “Young Folks” by PB&J out of my head! Sadly, it is firmly replaced with the repetitive non-stop looping replaying of the Illinois’ single “Alone Again”. I will be listening to this one all day. For the next week, I am sure. Damn you dj kEtchUp! Unfortunately, I have to agree with you, this one will never be as big as it deserves. I’m with you on the soundtrack hope.
Sorry, got distracted by those tunes and haven’t been able to finish the rest of the podcast yet, hehe.
Yeah, the Bat for Lashes is totally Sundays vs Bjerk, and has a def Kate/Tori influence to it too, but they seem to have their own brand of weirdness. Watch the video in that link. Another strange thing is that they’re on EMI.
