Tour of Free Skins (and how to get them)

 I’m not complaining, but can someone please tell me what the hell is going on with all the free skin? God, if only this stuff had been around when I was new!
I have always been a one-skin kind of girl. For the longest time all I wore was a Celestial Studios Vogue skin - still my favorite skin to date, honestly. Then I branched out and bought a Jessica skin by Cake, which I also still love dearly and wear a lot. I was so satisfied with my meager skin collection, I really wasn’t much of a skin shopper. Until now.
See, I started looking for freebies for Myg Morrisey, and holy crap! There was an avalanche before the holidays of really good free skin! So I started trying on a whole ton of different skins and then lo and behold, I had to have more. Score one for the SL designers, particularly Tuli, Chai and Dutch Touch who all got a nice chunkachange from me after I wore their freebies around and had to have more makeups.
Now I’ll tell you, dear M is for Myg fans, how to get my favorites of the free bunch for yourself.
The first skin here is a Re skin by the soon-to-be-SL-sainted Eloh Eliot. This woman went and released an entire line of skins, (Another Skin) (including a black skin) and it looks like a male skin will be released for free too. But get this - they were released with full perms and access to the photoshop files! Basically, she made a fully open source skin, and as far as I know, that’s a fashion first. Next up is a Chai skin. I am still salivating, and smartness, I’m not a huge bright red lips fan so I couldn’t stop myself from buying more Chai. This is my fave fave of teh freebies. You get this one by going to Le Zoo and picking up the latest issue of Second Style. This skin is Ginger, Vedette Freckle (you know I love freckles, right?) The eyes kill me on this skin. I just loves them.

Next up is a Tuli. Below I’m wearing the Tuli S4F Cream with Brown Brows (and of course, with freckles!) Join the Tuli group before 1/22/08 to get the free holiday gift, which includes the entire skin tone range with this make-up.

So, I do not know the reason so many designers are releasing free high quality skin, but I do want to say I’m all for it. Help them keep doing it buy sending some of your support (aka your Lindens) their way!
More? Well I can just agree with you, why nobody did this while I was plaincolored noob?! And yes, to bang my head (and other’s heads too) about implications on SL economy with all that free stuff coming along.

@dandellion - I’m coming down on the side of making the overall SL experience more palatable for a wider audience, which means lowering the bar somewhat on looking half decent in-world. I’m hoping that a more vibrant and diverse user-base is ultimately better for the SL economy (in the long haul, I mean). Though you raise a lot interesting questions at your post there, and indeed that’s why my first question here was, what the hell is going on here? Why are these folks releasing free skins? If it’s to get us to buy more, it worked for me.

Don’t get me wrong, free skins are very welcomed as they do much for overall SL experience. Beside that, they are doing a good job on lowering the number of those who register, come once and never again. Questions I asked there are more about our economy and our socio-economy.
Interesting. I have read dandellions blog and have to agree somewhat with her. These freebie skins, since people are always greedy in world, will go into the hands of some crooks who use the PS templates to make their ” own ” skin and sell it to the unknown public for a shitload of money. Just like some guy does in world, from brasil, selling ripped Naughty Designs skins. They look terribly transparent, more like jpg images. Yes this crook hast he guts to sell someones hard work and even advetize it on the new search ( check it out ). This would so so frustrate me, I mean to the point where people just may want to give up or come with DMCA and bring in a lawsuit.
I love some of the free stuff and yet I do understand the promotional pov of the maker. But in all honesty, so many newcomers are just out for the free and don’t seem to understand that some good shit costs money. I gave a noob a free male skin and he had the nerve to say ” you got a darker one, i don’t like this one “! So I gave that troll a lecture on what things REALLY cost and how you better slap some L’s into your account or get a job, build etc etc. He blew that off and said ” I am not gonna work on ” here”. * sighs *
Either way, I wish SL would have reconition (sp? )of individual IP’s of users who come, steal and be asshats about it.

Gala, when those packs of skins came to me my question was if somebody will get them and try to sell them. The answer (the only that actually make sense) was: no, if we put them all over the world.
dandellion, i hear what you’re saying, but they may do the same they did with naughty design, first they sold it, then retouched the skin badly then sold it again, then gave it out for free, and some places still sell these as resals skins. so i honestly think some greed ball will sale these to the unknown public.
Yes, I kinow. But, do we have any more good ways to protect IP?
well i suppose and ( hope ), LL will come out with a intellectual property id/ coding system. otherwise they are going to have lawsuits out of their arzes on them such as stroker toyz did, and i have heard lost from naughty design has done the same ( can’t confirm that one tho ).
Music industry put a lot more money and came out with DRM which, obviously, doesn’t work.
