The ass problem

Posted by myg

Hey everybody. As I’ve been bitching and moaning about all week, I am indeed sick again, this time with my old friend influenza. It’s been awhile. I haven’t missed her. At all.

But that’s not what I’m here to talk about today. I wanted to ask you all if you’re having this problem with some of your favorite prim skirts. I am, of course, talking about the ass problem.

Some things are not a matter of adjustment. See, I was all excited as I bought this cute red dress from Artilleri for Valentine’s day. Butt what you see is that the texture on my ass is actually a bit darker than the texture on the prim. I thought it was a windlight problem, as I noticed when I use windlight this happens all the time in skirts. Butt even when I adjust the prim skirt for better coverage (in this photo the skirt is rezzed right from the folder, no adjusting), there’s still a hideous difference in the colors. It’s like majorly disappointing. Especially since it seems like all my Artilleri skirts look like this now in windlight. Is it me? Is there some setting I should check out that’s ass friendly in windlight.

Today I was briefly in Dazzle, and I encountered this ass:

I mean that’s a really bad looking ass in skirt. The style of this ensemble is babydoll, meaning the waist of the skirt is supposed to be high as it is. But man, this chick has waaaaayyy too much ass for this dress. Sadly the texture on the ass isn’t rezzed, but trust me when I say even fully rezzed it looked horrible. I am not sure how she went out looking like that, unless she didn’t look at her ass. But who could not look at a wreck like that?

I am seriously no fashion expert. Can anyone help me out here?

I do not want to have to adjust my shape for every skirt, but maybe that’s what it takes. What do you do, you fashion mavens out there? How do you manage to wear these cute little numbers without showing your ass?

This is likely the last post from me until next week, because if we can manage it we’re going out of town to that place that has satellite internet (and isn’t at all SL friendly).

Don’t forget to hit -=CLOCKWORK= tomorrow night for Esteban’s funk set, Sunday night for Xax’s IDM electronica goodness, and then Monday night again for Esteban’s anti-Monday punk and stuff.

And - don’t get sick!

Love,
Myg

Yup prim textures and mesh (avatar) textures don’t always match in windlight :/ Designers will need to start working in WL to try to minimize but even then, I’m not sure it’s going to completely fix it.

As for ass in skirts, I wear my “no butt” shape in those situations. I made my own shape so I just copy and tweak it for a bunch of different things - just wear my 0 butt one if needed.

thanks gillian - i made my own shape too and have resisted the 0 ass mod, but i think it’s a must. don’t know why i’m being so stubborn about it in the first place, other than i am actually rather lazy…

but when windlight hits the main browser, i think we may have a fashion emergency on our hands. i mean who wants to always wear those poofed out pleated minis? we need skirt variety, damn it!

Even in the classic client textures often didn’t match well…

Personally I just avoid wearing skirts that show my ass through them and get mighty upset by ones that do… I refuse to conform to my clothes and demand my clothes conform to me…

Really i don’t get hit by it that much… and I don’t think I have that small an ass… o_0

For prim skirts that appear brighter than the glitch pant, if it’s modifiable (which most tend to be) I try editing the texture color to gray instead of the default white that most designers work with. It might take some playing around, but that usually solves the “brightness” problem.

For the “ass” problem, I’ll attempt to edit the skirt prims to correct the issue - either stretching the skirt or editing the prims individually if need be. With babydoll skirts, I find that using my system skirt shape helps, as does loading an alternate AO card if necessary. I do this because my normal AO has two stands that can make my hips/butt poke out of a skirt, and replacing them with something less dramatic helps. PixelDolls has an “Empire Dress” AO with stands that work. ANIMAH has a set of free animated stands that also work well. And Deimoselles in La Reina has a free modifiable AO that could be culled from as well.

Since it was mentioned too, you don’t need to set your butt to zero to have a good system skirt shape. Off the top of my head (and since I am not in-world to check) I think the sliders for hip width, saddlebags and butt size are the ones you need to adjust. Most people might only adjust one or two, and they set it to zero. But if you adjust all three and only reduce the measurement by as little as 10 and as much as half of your normal measurements, you should end up with a reasonable skirt shape. As an example, I think for my avatar’s skirt shape those measurements are set around 20-25, where they are normally around 30-45 (and my avatar is actually on the petite side.) Try playing around with it - depending on where your normal measurements are at it might be more or less.

I’m glad you posted this.. I’ve had the same problem as well.. and unlike some of the other people who commented to this post, I don’t know the first thing about editing clothing textures or prims. And I’m afraid to even try. I just posted this same topic on my own blog, and I was talking about how I don’t understand why there aren’t demos available for most clothing. I’ve made a few purchases I’ve regretted.. and without knowing how to fix the problems myself, that means I’m out hundreds of dollars and the outfit that looked cute on the model collects virtual dust in my inventory.

I obviously have a big ass or somethin, lol. my butts always showin through my skirts, so all i did was copy my shape and make one with a flat butt. you can’t really tell the difference with a skirt on anyway…

And with the color of the skirt thing, i dunno if it’s windlight or maybe just the designer i’ve had some clothes i bought that way…they look ok in the picture right? who know :P

I live with my two shapes. Both prim and linden skirts behave badly on my natural ass. Prim skirts show bad shadows and linden skirts make my hips huge like I’m a mother goddess of reproduction.

Thanks for the hints all. I noticed that too..I like wearing white and found that a big problem in WL with prims off a skirt. Will try some of the suggestions here.
Yep 2 shapes one for system skitrs and one for not is the go. But then I try to avoid system skirts, unless in a gown. Try the new sculpty skirts at Pixel mode. Fully mod/copy and so can fit like a glove over your present ass.

I’ve had the same problem with a couple of my longer skirts, too =P

And I have a cute little tush! (granted, it has a tail, but still)

Guess I’ll try some of the suggestions listed above.

  10. […] Myg talked about this very issue yesterday on her blog. I don’t know if the answer is a different tinting strategy by designers or to make all attachments mod so customers can try to fix this issue themselves depending on their pre-sets. The catch is, Windlight is still quite buggy, so not every designer is working in it yet - and even if they are, since each person can change their personal lighting scheme individually with vastly varying presets and local lighting, attachments might not look the same to everyone. I don’t know what the answer is…but if someone has thoughts on the best way to mitigate for your average shopper, I’d love to hear them. Perhaps it’s not affecting everyone the same way? […]

Ive have the same frustrating problem. Even worse when you are wearing shorts and your dancing. When you dip down it looks like a triangle could fit in the gap it shows. lol I dont know if im just really picky or some of you have noticed that too.

Wow thanks for chiming in everybody. I am sure now that I will create skirt-friendly ass mod, but still I fear certain skirt styles (like the flair skirt I am trying to wear in the first photo from Artilleri) may not survive even a drastic ass mod. I may try the tinting trick too.
