Pinch Hitter

I noticed Myg got tagged. I’ll pinch hit:

1. Pick up the nearest book (of at least 123 pages).
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the next three sentences.
5. Tag five people.

Nearest book: The Story of the Typewriter 1873-1923. Page 123 is a list of the phrase “To save time is to lengthen life” typewritten in 84 languages. So:

1. Demboraren irabaztia, biciaren luçatzia da.
2. Econmizar tèms es allargar la vida.
3. Temps ganga fa longo vido.

Tag, you’re it: Chestnut, Kit, dandellion, Wrath, & Argent!

A moving passage from, “Addressing Sexual Violence in Prisons: A National Snapshot of Approaches and Highlights of Innovative Strategies.”

“In Massachusetts, all allegations of staff sexual misconduct are handled by an agency-level interal affairs staff from the Office of Investigative Services and reported to the local district attorney. Reports of staff sexual misconduct may be received by the Office of Investigative Services via the inmate hotline, which goes straight to one of the two internal affairs offices. Or, a facility’s superintendent or local institution investigator may contact the Office of Investigative Services directly after learning about an incident of staff sexual misconduct from internal security or mental health staff.”

Oh wait, that’s a report, not necessarily a “book.”

Let’s see what I’ve got around here…ok…”Trauma and Juvenile Delinquency.”

“More specifically, the incarcerated females we interviewed reported exposure to high levels of traumatic violence in their homes and communities. For example, one out of every four females in our sample reported being beat up by a boyfriend, being threatened with a weapon by a boyfriend, having been forced to have sexual intercourse within the past few years, or having been hit with an object such as a bat or tire iron. In comparison with incarcerated boys, girls reported more physical punishment at home, including two times the rate of physical injury sustained as a result of childhood abuse.”

Jesus. If anyone ever wondered at the “edge” to my personality, look no further than the shit I get paid to read, think about and teach. Immersing yourself in this kind of work really does something to your brain. I’m convinced and living proof!

I hate to do this, as it contrasts the difference currently in play between my life and Myg’s, but here’s what’s closest at the moment:

From Donald Barthelme’s “Sixty Stories,” in the story “Paraguay:”

“He is tall, brown, wears a funny short beard, and is fond of zippered suits in brilliant colors: yellow, green, violet. He is, professionally, an arbiter of comedy. ‘A sort of drama critic.’ ‘More what you would term an umpire.’”

(Hi Jellybean! Thanks for tagging me! I think it’s unfair for me to tag people since I’m around so little these days and this is only a comment, but I liked this one very much.)
