WHAT: “Transgender Experience from Indonesia to Second Life”

Hi Everyone! The TRC will be hosting an event tomorrow at 2PM PST at the Non-Profit Commons amphitheatre with noted scholar Dr. Tom Boellstorff, Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Irvine, and Editor-in-Chief of American Anthropologist, the flagship journal of the American Anthropological Association.

In this informal talk, Dr. Boellstorff (Tom Bukowski in Second Life) will talk about his anthropological research on transgender experience in two very different locations: Indonesia and Second Life. In Indonesia, Prof. Boellstorff has studied warias (male to female transgenders) for over 15 years. Indonesia is the fourth largest nation (after China, India, and the USA) and home to more Muslims than any other country. Prof. Boellstorff has also studied Second Life culture since 2004, including questions of sexuality and gender. How does transgender experience differ in different cultures worldwide? How does it differ between the actual world and virtual worlds? What commonalities might we see as well? What is the role of family, community, discrimination, and rights in transgender experience?

Okay, so I told you ’bout the walrus and me man? You know we moved our Monday set to Friday nights (6-8 pm SL)? Well, here’s another clue you can mull, the walrus was Hulk. And Esteban/Hulk will be dj’ing Mondays at Clockwork playing a wider range of favorites and plenty o’ rock. Don’t worry, the funk will still happen on Friday nights, it just means there won’t be a hole in the schedule on Monday. Not only that, Clockwork has added KONA radio dj GoSpeed Racer to our Monday lineup from 4-6 pm to warm up the crowd before Esteban (and to provide a happy hour for those of you who have the live music open mic Mondays bug, yeah, you know who you are).

So now there is music at Clockwork six days a week (I’m still holding Saturday night open for special events), and lots of slots open before 6-8 for any djs in a European time zone, or later for those of you out west or on the Pacific Rim. (Hint, hint.) If you’re a dj looking for a gig and think you might fit in at Clockwork, point me toward a podcast or drop a notecard on my profile with a playlist from a recent set. Please don’t ask me to come hear you live; as much as I’d like to, my RL schedule prohibits me from many extracurricular activities.

Alex started his semester today. It’s his final semester of classes. WooT!

I’ve been sick so I’ve got nothing for posts. Sorry gang. I must have got it from Gorgeous Guen!

I have been playing around with this Flock web browser. It lets me do some cool blogging tricks like blog from the browser (as opposed to the WordPress dashboard) and drop/drag images or text in from anywhere. Flock calls itself a social web browser. What the hell does that mean? Whatever, I am not terribly web 2.0 social these days but I do like the flickr feature that displays new media from my contacts in a media bar over the browser window. It’s a little cluttered but fun.

Anyways, we had fun at ye olde Clockwork last night. dj kEtcHup spun a mix of old and new rock gems, and then EsteHulk turned the funk up to 11 in honor of MLK day.

It was all fun and games until somebody broke out the suitcase nuke. Then it was fun, games, slagging on the Monte Cristo and gagging on virtual toxic flames.

Does Monday get any better than this?

Hulk not sleep one night, hang out with friend cranach in Hulk apartment.

Hulk happy. Hulk find new funk at old record shop. Hulk clean with special Hulk mix of water, alcohol, and dishwashing soap. Hulk not have time to make mp3′s yet, though. Hard to use puny human turntable with big hulk hands.
