The Last Mix Tape

tape

Ever since I’ve known Alex (which is a very long time) he’s had a crate of these that have followed him into every domicile he’s ever inhabited. Even long after he ability to burn things to cd or create playlists in iTunes. In his post on his youthful mix tape habit he at long last delves into the personal matter of collection addiction, and the result is a kick ass mix of songs from the 80s.

Read the post and download (or stream) this gem here.

The music is buried deep in the text, but it’s there and worth the dig.

What’s your god damned dream?

We were having a little talk, me and Alex, about how funny it is that of all the things that are possible in Second Life, one thing we really enjoy is having a club.  We could be winged creatures, out ransacking mythic lands. We could be gangters with bigass guns setting up hits and extorting $L from our neighbors (actually, maybe we should do that…). We could be part machine – in fact, in SL we actually *are* part machine. But what do we spend our time doing the most? Recreating a part of our history that we never got to live in the first place.

Alex and I have spent a lot of time playing in clubs in our indie-rock band. I have spent more hours in stench-riddled dives from Boston to Charleston, rocking out, drinking cheap beer and squatting to pee over nasty public toilets than I probably have in shopping malls. We often fantasized about owning our own club but never wanted to deal with all the alcoholics.  And it wasn’t conducive to being in a band either. So we never did, and came to terms with the fact that we never would.

Then came Second Life, which offered the chance to have a version of that experience without the drawbacks.  Here we managed to create some of the club atmosphere, share good music, meet digital people and make friends, without having to deal with the drawbacks of a real club. The other day Alex and I discussed this and said, “huh – that’s damned cool.” And it is.

I’ve been thinking a lot about “real” in Second Life and what that means. Last post talked about identity a bit, as that’s the blog topic ablaze in the SL Blogosphere.  Now I’m thinking about what it is we do. It is funny how sometimes we choose to emulate the physical world – we shop, we hang out, we hook up, we dance.  And even though those experiences in some ways pale by comparison to the real world experience, they are not without value.  Like when you can own a club and NEVER have to clean up some drunk’s vomit or blood, maybe it’s even better than the real thing.

So what’s your god damed dream, and how are you realizing it in SL?

The Mandelbrot Set Returns!

    Hello folks!

Yeah, I know it’s been a long while since I’ve post, and I apologize to any clandestine fans who haven’t commented or anything. Its not really that I haven’t been playing at clckwrk – its more that I just haven’t been satisfied with a piece enough to stick it up on here, is all.

Anyways, no more – since I’m quite happy with this mix here, again – both the tunage and sticking it together. I still have a lot to learn, and could definitely use a better toolset to work with while mixing, but otherwise, I think its good and hope you do too. Its a mix of melodic housey piano stuff and some bleepy electro cuts and all that stuff. Kinda splits in the middle then bends back, funnily enough.

As usual, feedback and stuff is appreciated.

Clockwork: (n)eXt podcast, electronica tonight, and new events!

Clockwork is for lovers

(The podcast is at the end, so scroll down if you’re in a hurry for some aural relief.)

Okay, so I told you ’bout the walrus and me man? You know we moved our Monday set to Friday nights (6-8 pm SL)? Well, here’s another clue you can mull, the walrus was Hulk. And Esteban/Hulk will be dj’ing Mondays at Clockwork playing a wider range of favorites and plenty o’ rock. Don’t worry, the funk will still happen on Friday nights, it just means there won’t be a hole in the schedule on Monday. Not only that, Clockwork has added KONA radio dj GoSpeed Racer to our Monday lineup from 4-6 pm to warm up the crowd before Esteban (and to provide a happy hour for those of you who have the live music open mic Mondays bug, yeah, you know who you are).

So now there is music at Clockwork six days a week (I’m still holding Saturday night open for special events), and lots of slots open before 6-8 for any djs in a European time zone, or later for those of you out west or on the Pacific Rim. (Hint, hint.) If you’re a dj looking for a gig and think you might fit in at Clockwork, point me toward a podcast or drop a notecard on my profile with a playlist from a recent set. Please don’t ask me to come hear you live; as much as I’d like to, my RL schedule prohibits me from many extracurricular activities.

-=Clockwork=-
Schedule as of 1.27.08

a club mix to start your weekend on the right day

Friday, 6-8 pm
(n)eXt w/ dj keTchUp
two hours of mostly new music–indie rock and club tracks

Friday, 8-9 pm
[a contest-winning name will be here when we figure out who won]
dj Esteban digs deep into funklore and unearths the mothership connection, shake your rump!

In any case, for those of you who want to recap last Monday’s new music set, here’s the podcast. And yeah, there’s some old stuff in there. Sue me. :p Betcha can’t name more than 10 without looking at the track listing. Have a good semester, DJ kEtchUp

Alex started his semester today. It’s his final semester of classes. WooT!

I’ve been sick so I’ve got nothing for posts. Sorry gang. I must have got it from Gorgeous Guen!

I have been playing around with this Flock web browser. It lets me do some cool blogging tricks like blog from the browser (as opposed to the WordPress dashboard) and drop/drag images or text in from anywhere. Flock calls itself a social web browser. What the hell does that mean? Whatever, I am not terribly web 2.0 social these days but I do like the flickr feature that displays new media from my contacts in a media bar over the browser window. It’s a little cluttered but fun.

Anyways, we had fun at ye olde Clockwork last night. dj kEtcHup spun a mix of old and new rock gems, and then EsteHulk turned the funk up to 11 in honor of MLK day.

It was all fun and games until somebody broke out the suitcase nuke. Then it was fun, games, slagging on the Monte Cristo and gagging on virtual toxic flames.

Does Monday get any better than this?

Stay tuned for another Mandelbrot Set podcast, stat.

Blogged with Flock

The Mandelbrot Set – First Post!

mandel_2.gifWell…hello everybody!

I have a bit of trepidation about posting here and all, as I’m not the most engrossing writer, but I figured the chance to put my sets up is worth a shot!

Anyways, those of you who go to clockwork know I’ve been regularly bringing the electronic stuffs on Sundays, for well…at least a decent amount of time. For those who don’t – I’m an electronic devotee in all its forms: from beard stroking wtf-is-that IDM/braindance to hooktastic dance cuts, I’m there. Not to say I don’t respect other genres, but thats where my passion is.

I’m gonna post my most recent mix, which is well..from Sunday! I’m really happy with how it turned out, and quite eager to share! It’s mostly IDM and minimal and tech, and very percussive if anything – pretty dancey too! Hopefully you will enjoy it as much as I enjoyed mixing it.

Anyways, here’s the music – hope you all enjoy and thanks for putting up with my rambling!
